History before DHL?

Before I joined DHL Express, I did many different things. I studied to be an interior architect and I worked as a fashion designer for Kaat Tilley. Creativity has always been the most important factor for me in my job.

How did you end up at DHL?

I’m going to be honest: I never dreamed of working in customer service. As you know, my passion lies more with the more creative stuff, but I started with an interim contract of 6 months at DHL Express. I really liked it and was offered a fixed contract straight away.

What do you like most about your job?

Without a doubt: the colleagues! The work environment is very nice and the people are open-minded. For example, my manager, Chantal, knows that I like to be creative. She lets me use those skills at work. Where others take pen and paper to make notes during a meeting, she asks me to make a collage or craft work about the subject. Also, I let myself go all out during the Christmas season in the past. I baked cookies at home in the shape of DHL vans to decorate the tree and cut out snowflakes to brighten up the office desks.

In addition, the work as a customer service agent is also very versatile. Every day you listen to different people and it’s satisfying when you can offer them a solution to a problem.

Michele’s sister and her favorite teddy bear in Paris.

What is your best DHL memory?

Gosh, I’ll never forget that. It was 1997 and I was on vacation in Paris with my sister and parents. The last day we went to the Eiffel Tower and I remember standing with my mom in front of the Louis Vuitton window on the Champs Elysee. Before we started the ride home, we went for a quick dinner at a cozy bistro. It tasted good, but we had to leave for Belgium fast. Once we arrived home we were dead tired, but my sister couldn’t sleep…. She had lost her teddy bear! We searched everywhere: in the car, in the suitcases… But alas, the bear was nowhere to be found. Luckily, dad had brought the bistro’s business card, so we could call them. And as it turned out, it was still there! They contacted DHL and the next day my sister could sleep well again, with her teddy bear.
