Of course, we don’t have to tell you that working for a large international company at the airport is super cool. At DHL Aviation, every employee has the opportunity to develop themselves and highlight their strengths. This week we share the story of Ahmet Calgan (28) and Seppe Diels (23), who both established a beautiful career while working at the Brussels Hub.
Why did you wanted to be working at the brussels Hub?
Ahmet: “An acquaintance asked me if I wasn’t interested in a job as a technician at the Brussels Hub. I already had several years of work experience, but not yet in the technical sector. However, it appealed to me, especially since I have a degree in electro-mechanics. I decided to take the chance and in September 2013 I could start working as a junior technician”.
Seppe: “After graduating in electronics, I immediately started working in a data centre. That was fun to start, but after a few years I felt it was time for a new challenge. There were a lot of options, but in the end I decided to take my chance at DHL Aviation. I had heard that there are a lot of opportunities for career development there”.
What do you like about working at the brussels hub?
Ahmet: “DHL invests in their staff. There are a lot of training courses and everyone gets opportunities to develop themselves personally. At the beginning of 2017 the Brussels Hub moved to a new building. I then took the lead in integrating our maintenance team as smoothly as possible. That’s why I was able to follow a training course in Denmark for a fortnight, together with some colleagues. That was a very nice experience and we learned everything there is to know about our new sorting installation”
Seppe: “I started as a technician at the hub in May 2019. From the start, I noticed that you can achieve a lot there, as long as you seize the opportunities offered. So I quickly had a goal for myself: the role of supervisor. I always kept this goal in mind and I tried to prepare myself well for it. For example, I took the team with me when morale had fallen a bit and came up with new ideas to show that I was committed.

Ahmet Calgan (28) – senior supervisor
Both of you have a nice career path. Would you like to tell us more about that?
Ahmet: “Thank you. That’s right. In November 2017, a few months after training in Denmark, the position of maintenance supervisor became vacant. I didn’t hesitate for a second. Immediately put myself forward as a candidate and… I got the role! I was so happy! During my role as supervisor, my supervisors always encouraged me to keep challenging and developing myself. Within maintenance, there are various career opportunities. Not only in managerial positions, there are also technical positions in which you need more expertise. These are at the same level as a supervisor role. However, I myself saw my future more in leadership. At the end of 2019, the position of senior supervisor became vacant. I doubted for a moment whether I would stand a chance because I had not been a supervisor for so long. I raised this with my supervisors, but they only motivated me to go for it nonetheless. So since this year, I have been proud to take on the role of maintenance senior supervisor. I’m proud of the journey I’ve already taken and I’m grateful for the colleagues who have motivated me.
Seppe: “Because Ahmet became senior supervisor, the position of maintenance supervisor became vacant. Of course, this seemed like the perfect opportunity for me, but since I only started working for DHL in 2019, I wondered if it wasn’t too soon. My supervisors gave me the last ‘push’ I needed and I applied. Meanwhile, I have been a supervisor for 9 months and I haven’t regretted my decision for a second. At DHL you can get very far, regardless of your age, as long as you have the right commitment and attitude of course”.
