VAT exemption expires as from 1 July 2021

From 1 July 2021, the VAT exemption on import shipments from countries outside the EU will expire. As a result, the exemption limit of €22 will no longer apply and VAT will have to be paid on all non-EU imports. Depending on the agreement between sender and receiver, one of these two parties will be charged with these costs.

Example: when you order a watch of €20 in China, you will not pay VAT. When you order an identical watch in Germany, you will pay 21% VAT and you will actually pay €24,20. As from July 1, the EU will level the playing field between entrepreneurs inside and outside the EU and the VAT percentage will be applied on all purchases starting from €0. This means that you will usually have to pay 21% VAT on the value of the goods and on the total freight costs.
