Packaging goods for shipping: the basics
Compared to other aspects of shipping, packaging may seem simple. However, whether you're a private shipper or a business, there are several important considerations and decisions to make. This guide covers the basics.
Asses your product
What are you shipping? Consider the weight, fragility, and value of your product.
Additional questions may apply: does your products need controlled conditions? Are there special packaging regulations? If you're a business shipper, make sure to take packaging costs into account when you're determining your product price.
Choose appropriate packaging materials
Packaging is categorized into external and internal types.
External packaging usually involves cardboard boxes; choose high-quality corrugated cardboard and avoid reusing old boxes. Internal packaging cushions your product and fills gaps inside the box to prevent movement. Styrofoam is often banned due to environmental concerns; alternatives include biodegradable air peanuts, bubble wrap, foam wrap, air pillows, crumpled paper, corrugated inserts, and shredded cardboard.
