Smishing – Fraudulent SMS in the name of Deutsche Post & DHL

Some of our customers have already received fraudulent SMS or “Smishing texts”. Smishing, combines the words “SMS” and “phishing” and refers to the illegal attempt to solicit sensitive information via SMS.

“Ihr Paket ist unterwegs. Klicken Sie auf folgenden Link, um die Sendungsverfolgung zu öffnen.” (Your parcel has been sent. Click on the following link to open your shipment tracking.). Some of our customers have received these text messages. Unfortunately it’s a scam.

Mobile users receive what looks like a parcel notification via text message from Deutsche Post or DHL with a link to track or confirm the shipment. You should never click on the link in these fraudulent SMS!

What happens when you click on the link?

When you click on the link, malware is installed on your device. It accesses your personal data. In addition, the fake SMS is sent to all your contacts saved on the device. And depending on the terms your mobile service plan, that be pricey

What to do if you receive a fraudulent SMS

  • If you do not recognize the number, do not open the fraudulent SMS. Delete it immediately.
  • If you do recognize the sender, ask the person about the link and whether they meant to send the SMS.
  • Never click on links from an unknown sender; nor on any messages that you were not expecting to receive.
  • If possible, de-activate direct carrier billing on your device to prevent orders/payments being made through your mobile phone billing.
  • If you receive a suspicious SMS indicating Deutsche Post or DHL as the sender, please send a screenshot of the SMS and phone number to phishing-dpdhl@dhl.com.

Already clicked on the link? What now?

  • Switch your smartphone to flight mode.
  • Inform your service provider and check whether you have already incurred costs due to the SMS.
  • If you haven’t already, de-activate direct carrier billing
  • Report the case to your local police. Bring your smartphone, any screenshots of the SMS, proof of costs incurred, etc.
  • Start your smartphone in safe mode and see if any apps have been installed recently without your knowledge.
  • Remove these apps and then re-start your smartphone.
